| Citation | Gruneberg, Hans (Pinner, Middlesex). Ph.D., M.D., Capt. (R.A.M.C.) Reader in Genetics in the University of London. Dr Gruneberg has published 60 papers, mainly on mammalian genetics. He has dealt with the embryology and pathology of a number of congenital abnormalities. A striking result was the discovery in congenitally anaemic mice of a type of pathological erythrocyte, the siderocyte, which has since been found in several human diseases, including lead poisoning, and in stored blood. Two congenital anomalies in the mouse were shown to be due to a failure of osteoclasis, and such varied end results as hydrocephalus and heart failure were traced back to anomalies of cartilage growth.
