| Description | Daily records of the weather at Calcutta, usually two or three observations per day, at varying times. Columns for date and time, barometer, hygrometer, thermometer inside and outside, kind and quantity of clouds, wind direction and force, rain, and miscellanous remarks. The observations are interrupted by the author's travels: from 1 January 1781 there are limited instrument readings: entries with some geographical references include: 13 January 1781 [p.84] 'Midnapoore Camp'; 21 January [p.85] 'Curruckpoore'; 29 January [p.85] 'Mocurrumpoore'; 30 January 'Kutnagar'; 31 January 'Dantoon'; 28 February [p.86] 'On the Island of -' 19 May [p.90] 'Camp near Chitamapet' By late 1782 there are very few entries until an apparent return to Calcutta on 27 May 1782 [p.106] 'On the 27th in the Morning, I arrived and went to Town...'. After which the location of observations alternate between 'Garden' and 'Fort' [Fort William], for example p.213.
There are notices of earthquakes and other phenomena, including siginifcant storms sinking shipping: 2 November 1787 [p.253] 'My Pinnace was wrecked & many Vessells lost on the River'. Apparently a fair copy of material in MA/201. |
