Description | Daily meteorological observations taken at several times during each day, varying from two to five instrument readings. The printed sheets have columns for hour of the day, barometer in inches, thermometer in degrees, maximum and minimum temperatures of the 24 hour periods, wind quarter and strength, weather and general remarks. Commencing with a note [p.2]: 'The Temperature registered throughout this journal is that of the external air in the shade'.
The general remarks are sparse, but contain notes on the aurora borealis and news of unusual weather, including on 15-16 December 1839: 'This gale was encountered by the Schr. Eagle of this Port, off Cape Sable on the 16th when she was dismasted & nearly foundered...' [p.33].
