Title | Exhibition card for samples from the Soho Mint |
Date | 11 November 1799 |
Description | Headed 'SOHO MINT' a trade card or exhibition label describing a variety of coin specimens (guineas, louis d'ors, halfpennies and farthings) made by Matthew Boulton's coinmaking machinery at the Soho Foundry. Their standardised features are emphasised: perfect circularity, concavity, smooth surfaces and milled edges. The text concludes by stating that the adoption of this currency would hinder counterfeiting and invites careful handling: 'In examining the specimens, please to touch the edges only'.
