DescriptionSilver campana-shaped cup, the lower body chased with formal foliage and bullrushes below engraved inscriptions, flanked by military trophies, a wrecked ship below, entwined serpent handles issuing from female masks, the rim applied with a frieze of formal flowerheads, anthemions and geometric straps, the cover and foot fluted and with bold beaded collars, the former with eagle crest finial and the banner 'E Pluribus Unum' [out of many, one], square plinth on fish feet.

Inscription reads 'To Daniel Ross Esqr. Commander of the Honble East India Company's ship Discovery in testimony of the manly and important services rendered by him in contributing to the rescue of the American ship Asia of Philadelphia, Capt. Williamson, from imminent peril and the mouth of the Tigris in the month of September 1807'. The reverse with a list of subscribers from American insurance companies.

Reported the acceptance by the Officers of a gift to the Royal Society by Mr W A Seaton and his sister, Dr Ethel Seaton, of a silver cup presented to their great - grandfather Captain Daniel Ross (FRS, 1822), of the East India company's navy, in recognition of his services in contributing to the rescue of the American ship 'Asia' at the mouth of the Tigris in 1807.
Resolved - That the action by the Officers be confirmed, that the offer by Mr Spottiswoode be accepted and that the thanks of the Society be returned to the donors.'
