Title | Letter from Edward Sabine, 12 Park Place to Humphrey Lloyd, Trinity College, Dublin |
Date | 12 January 1842 |
Description | Frederick Marow Eardley-Wilmot (director of the Cape of Good Hope magnetic observatory) is still hopeful of conducting a magnetic survey of parts of Africa, despite Sabine's efforts to dissuade him from this and to remain committed to the observatory work.
Sabine rejoices at the prospect of Lloyd becoming 'President of the Academy'.
Sabine reports on the reception his paper on magnetic disturbances was given at the latest meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. [Samuel Hunter] Christie and [William Snow] Harris were particularly critical; Sabine thought unfairly so.
[Alexander von] Humboldt is coming to London and Sabine hopes that the 'proper compliment' of people, such as Lloyd, will come to see him. |
