Title | Letter from Edward Sabine, 12 Park Place to Humphrey Lloyd |
Date | 8 March 1842 |
Description | Edward Sabine is awaiting the latest magnetic term day observations from Van Diemen's Land [Tasmania; Lutruwita or Truwana]. In the meantime however Sabine has received results from [James Clark] Ross's Antarctica expedition which Sabine believes call into dispute the isoclinal lines in the southern hemisphere as laid down by [Karl Friedrich] Gauss.
[Francis] Beaufort has been ordering instruments for a 'Captain Graves', including a six-inch dip circle from [Thomas Charles] Robinson, though Sabine believes Robinson is too ill to undertake this task. Graves may also need magnetometers but for these Graves would need proper training in their operation, something which is difficult because of a lack of a geophysical observatory 'here' [i.e. Britain], Sabine alleges. [Thomas Brown] Jordan has also recently relocated to London but has no space yet in which he could attend to the magnetometers.
A Mr. 'Allen' has not received instructions regarding the [Wilhelm] Weber transportable magnetometer he has been sent due to a mix up at the Geographical Society. Notes on the results Sabine has thus far received from [James Clark] Ross's Antarctica expedition: everything Sabine has had, Lloyd has also seen, Sabine assures Lloyd.
A translation of Gauss's 'Resultate' by Sabine's wife, Elizabeth Juliana Leeves, is now two-thirds finished and will hopefully be passed to the publisher Richard Taylor soon.
A new observatory is to be established in Havana by a 'Dr. Jorg', friend of [Wilhelm] Weber's, and is to be supplied with Göttingen magnetometers.
Sabine has not yet been told whether he is to superintend the publication of the Ordnance magnetic observatories' returns. |
