| Description | Russell informs Lloyd he is sending the last three term day observations and daily work for the same period. Russell notes he should have sent these earlier but was 'unmade' for the whole month and could barely keep the observations going. Russell discusses his investigation into the cause of the difference in the value of 'v' accordingly as the north end of the magnet was east or west, and the how the plane of detorsion was determined. Russell describes his difficulty with gathering wires (wires twisting) which gave the same results in both positions of the magnet. Russell discusses reasons why the angle will not come out exactly alike in both positions of the magnet.
Russell informs Lloyd that the daily observations he is sending may be useless due to the breaks.
Russell informs Lloyd that the vertical force magnetometer could not be observed at the beginning of September.
Discussion on two observations to determine the deviation of the magnetic axis from the bisection crosses.
Russell informs Lloyd there are scarce information to report regarding the meteorological instruments as he has not yet received the standard barometer and thermometer. Russell is currently using a mountain barometer.
Due to bad weather conditions and lack of visibility of stars Russell has been unable to determine the angle Z.
Discussion on temperature corrections. Russell asks Lloyd his opinion and advice on the experiments conducted by Russell regarding this.
Russell discusses an 'extraordinary' observation on 25th September regarding the torsion circle. |
