Title | Letter from John Allan Broun, Makerstoun, Kelso to Humphrey Lloyd |
Date | 26 October 1846 |
Description | Discussion on observations made by Broun using the bifilar magnet [at the Makerstoun Magnetic Observatory]. Broun describes the method in which he obtained results, using marble slabs, and wooden blocks, causing lines to be drawn at various distances. Includes small drawing of a rectangular block of wood which was made to carry the deflecting magnet so that the curve would be at the same height as the bifilar magnet. Broun describes lines drawn on the blocks at different angles. Discussion on results made for the balance needle and values of q. Discussion on the temperature coefficient and the difficulties this is causing to the unit coefficient for the bifilar magnet. Broun comments on the differences between his results and Lloyd's. |
