| Description | Eardley-Wilmot updates Lloyd on the proceedings at the Cape of Good Hope observatory.
Eardley-Wilmot informs Lloyd he now has the declination and horizontal magnetometers in adjustment. Discussion on the height of the rollers, and the trouble this has caused. Eardley-Wilmot informs Lloyd that the only way to proceed was to allow the bar of the fixed telescope to come to a rest and turn the fixed telescope in azimuth. Discussion on silk fibres. Eardley-Wilmot discusses his results regarding deflecting at equal distances in the meridian.
Discussion on the collimator and horizontal force magnetometer, and the best method to level the instrument.
Eardley-Wilmot describes his method of making observations which he has changed.
Eardley-Wilmot will use the theodolite as a R S telescope, to verify they are in the same plane.
The vertical force instrument has not been put into place yet.
Description of the trouble the scale of the horizontal force instrument not being in the field of the telescope when the intensity was in adjustment.
Eardley-Wilmot asks Lloyd about the method of checking the vibrations by using the copper rings.
Eardley-Wilmot received [Edward] Sabine’s letter regarding the dip. Discussion on getting discordant results. |
