| Description | Lefroy informs Lloyd that he and Captain [James Clark] Ross arrived in Jamestown harbour on the 31st January. Lefroy updates Lloyd regarding the Longwood observatory. Discussion on the elevated plain of the island being adaptable for meteorological observations, and the climate making it an interesting spot. Lefory informs Lloyd that Captain Ross came there to make his observations, however he experienced local disturbances such as the ones in James Valley, and in the stations he took the dips Captain Ross found considerable differences. Captain Ross therefore requested Lefroy to repeat the observations. Lefroy includes his dip results for five different stations. Lefroy discusses the advantages of building the observatory at Longwood. Discsussion on materials used for the building, and the difficulties Lefroy is facing in procuring labourers. Lefroy informs Lloyd that it may take some time before the observatory is complete. Lefroy discusses his temporary arrangements and instruments set up, includes a small drawing to describe his set up of one of the instruments on a cask buried in the ground under a tent. Lefroy requests some news from either Lloyd or Edward Sabine regarding the arrangements with the German associations. |
