Description | Report of the superintendents of excavation. At the end of September, the exploration of the Sally Port area of the cavern had been completed up to the distance of 61 feet from the entrance - the excavation is ongoing. A description is provided of the change in floor layers, with 'pieces of old stalagmitic floor,' pebbles of grit, flint, quartz, and slate being found. In September, a considerable amount of fossils were found. Amongst them were: 103 teeth of horse, 80 of hyena, 46 of rhinoceros, 29 of bear, 17 of fox, 12 of elephant, six of sheep, five each of deer and rabbit, four each of lion and ox, and two of small rodents; five portions of antlers; and several gnawed bones. Two flint implements and six flint flakes were also found, all of the common whitened flint. Two outline sketches of the two flint implements are provided (No. 4521) and (No.4561). |
