Title | Sixty-seventh report of progress of excavations by William Pengelly and Edward Vivian, Torquay, to the British Association Kent's Cavern Committee |
Creator | Pengelly; William (1812-1894); geologist |
Vivian; Edward (1808–1893); science writer; poet |
Date | 6 July 1871 |
Description | Monthly report of the superintendents of excavation. They are still occupied in the Sloping Chamber. On the 24 June, a section was completed which revealed: a stalagmitic floor, with cave-earth beneath, followed by 'Old Floor' beneath this, which is the same as found in the Lecture Hall and other areas of the cavern. It seems as though MacEnery had failed to find this Old Floor by stopping his excavation three feet prior. A list of teeth found of various animals is provided, inclusive of teeth from: hyena, horse, rhinoceros, megaceros, elephant, and bear; alongside the mention of bones, bone fragments and one flint flake being found. Mr [George] Busk, a member of the Committie, visted the Cavern. |
