Title | Draft letter from Thomas Young to Augustin Jean Fresnel |
Date | 1819 |
Description | Draft response added to the letter from Fresnel. In response to the error Fresnel found in Young's formula of interference, agrees with Fresnel and doesn't know what he may have meant with his original formula. Thanks for the copies of Fresnel's important treatise on diffraction from the Annales de Physique et de Chimie, which is a major milestone for optics. Discusses [Christiaan] Huygens' theory of light further, as well as [Isaac] Newton and [Nicolas] Malebranche's response. Places [Simeon Denis] Poisson and [Jean-Baptiste] Biot's contribution in perspective. |
