| Description | Since their meeting with [John William] Lubbock, [Samuel Hunter] Christie and Major [Edward] Sabine on the subject of magnetic observations near London, the Committee on Physics has communicated with the Astronomer Royal [George Biddell Airy]. He has offered to superintend magnetic and meteorological observations at Greenwich. Council of the Royal Society has requested that the accompanying resolutions are forwarded to Melbourne, should the Government's view and Airy's coincide. The Greenwich offer would save money since buildings are already available. At the time of their meeting, the delegation doubted whether the Astronomer Royal would be able to take on the additional supervision. |
