Title | Report on the calculating machine recently constructed by W Donkin; to the Registrar General |
Date | [1 September 1859] |
Description | A report on the Calculating Machine constructed by W Doukin, now in the office of the Registrar General. Informs that with the exception of a few minor improvements, the machine is a copy of Mr Scheutz, which has already been reported on. A copy is enclosed [ not present]. Explains the workings of the machine have been observed and does so to the highest degree, able to print a table in one hour and 15 minutes, where it would take two hours and 55 minutes for another machine, and two would have to be used to guard against errors. States it is easy to see a saving for a machine to work on equations on a large scale, but would probably be more useful to use it to print pre-exisiing tables for the public. States it is a source of satisfaction that the machine has been produced. Report is undersigned by [George Gabriel] Stokes, Wheatstone, Willis, and Miller. 'For Letter see folio 153 [MS/426/673] |
