Title | Copy letter from Sir Clements Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to Sir Michael Foster |
Creator | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Recipient | Foster; Sir; Michael (1836-1907); British physiologist and politician |
Date | 8 February 1901 |
Description | Complains that Royal Society members of the Joint Committee [for the National Antarctic Expedition] have been meeting independently to discuss changes to the Executive Committee's 'carefully considered draft' [of instructions for the expedition], with the aim of rushing through amdendments without giving the Royal Geographical Society [RGS] time to properly consider them. Markham considers this so unfair that it threatens the continued work of the Joint Committee. RGS Joint Committee members should have been involved in discussions over amendments, and Captain Scott will also need to agree to any changes. Markham refuses any further meetings until the alterations have been carefully considered by the RGS members and its Council. |
