Title | Letter from Sir Clements Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to [Alfred Bray] Kempe |
Creator | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Recipient | Kempe; Sir; Alfred Bray (1849-1922) |
Date | 25 January 1902 |
Description | Proposing an agreement between the two Societies [The Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society] concerning the disposal of reports and specimens from the 'Discovery' expedition. Markham thinks there will be no question about magnetic observations, soundings reports, and calculations of the specific gravity of sea water, which should all go to the Hydrographer [of the Navy]. Meteorological observations should go to the Meteorological Office and atmospheric carbonic anhydride determinations should go to Professor [Edmund Albert] Letts.
There are reports on plankton by [Thomas Vere] Hodgson, on phytoplankton by [Reginald] Koettlitz, on zoology by [Hartley] Ferrar and [Edward Adrian] Wilson. These are accompanied by four cases of plankton and geological specimens, and five cases of bird skins. These should be entrusted to [George Robert Milne] Murray, based on the terms of his appointment. However, Markham reminds Kempe of [Robert Falcon] Scott's thoughts concerning Murray, and Murray's methods made him unpopular with the Scientific staff 'who do not like their collections being in his hands'. Markham notes that this is unfortunate, but little can be done now. Suggests this could be reconsidered when the expedition returns, if the views of Scott and the staff are still strong. Markham asks the officers of the Royal Society for their views about the Reports and Collections.
With a postscript noting that Murray has not yet answered the letter from the Finance Committee |
