Title | Letter from Sir William Huggins, 90 Upper Tulse Hill, to the Treasurer [Alfred Bray Kempe] |
Creator | Huggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Date | 6 July 1902 |
Description | Has received a letter from [Sir Clements] Markham with directions for Scott, to be sent to him on board the relief ship which sails on Wednesday morning. Huggins has compared the letter with the printed one agreed upon by the Council of the Royal Society, and noted a new sentence has been added. This states that a ship will be sent the following season if Scott finds it impossible to return to Lyttelton; 'Now this clearly gives Scott permission to stay another year'. Markham recognises that if it were really impossible for Scott to return another ship would be necessary, but he does not know if Scott has been given other private instructions.
In a postscript Huggins states he will not sign the letter and suggests Markham should be told to rewrite the letter to remove this sentence, even if time is short. 'The little time left is wholly Markham's fault. I told him at the dinner on June 23rd that the Council had agreed to the printed letter'. |
