TitleCopy letter from [John Walter Gregory], Melbourne University, to A B [Alfred Bray] Kempe
CreatorGregory; John Walter (1864-1932); British Geologist; Explorer
Date8 February 1902
DescriptionHas received Kempe's letter concerning the Melbourne pendulums, and hopes Kempe will not mind him showing it to the Government Astronomer. Notes that Murray's letter to Kempe assumes that Gregory blames Scott in the matter, though he does not. Sir Clements Markham's memory has 'deceived him', as Gregory never told him the Melbourne pendulums were given up. They had been made before Gregory arrived in England in December 1900, and once standardised they were ready for Gregory to start practicing with when he returned in March. His article in Nature, which he presumes Markham must have read, also shows he had no idea that the pendulums had been abandoned.

Kempe's letter will show the Observatory 'that the matter was due to a amisunderstanding that might readily have occurred in the haste of the expedition equipment'. the offer to financially compensate the loss won't be pursued, but will help ease the feeling at the Observatory that they had been treated discourteously. Gregory is also sorry to hear of [Georgy Robert Milne] Murray's illnes.
