TitleLetter from Sir Clements Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to Sir William Huggins
CreatorMarkham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society
Date2 April 1903
DescriptionMarkham is anxious about the funds and hopes the Royal Society Council will agree to the proposal on 23 [April]. 'Time is of the utmost moment If the Government refuses help'. Markham will reduce the 'Morning' expenses until December, but the ship will need to go south with supplies as the 'Discovery' only has a year of provisions. The tinned provisions turning bad is likely the fault of 'Messrs Maconochie' [Maconochie Brothers Limited] who are a contractor for the War Office, Admiralty and India Office. Scott's 'wonderful journey' has covered at least 600 miles. [George] Mulock, who travelled on the 'Morning' has replaced [Ernest] Shackleton on the 'Discovery'. The trustees of the British Museum have made arrangements for publication of the Antarctic Expedition's natural history and geological results.
