Title | Letter from Sir Clements Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to [Alfred Bray] Kempe |
Creator | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Date | 24 April 1903 |
Description | Markham does not want to delay approaching the government, as further letters [from the 'Discovery'] will not change the fact that the men will be spending a second winter in the Antarctic and their provisions will only last until January. Markham needs to begin the work of collecting funds as soon as possible. 'It is anxious and doubtful work and it all falls entirely upon me, as it has done from the beginning'. Is concerned officials will refuse the request, and suggests they will need around £12,000 in total. |
