TitleDraft letter from A B [Alfred Bray] Kempe, 10 Porchester Square, to Sir William Huggins
CreatorKempe; Sir; Alfred Bray (1849-1922)
Date14 February 1903
DescriptionKempe has two observations concerning Sir Clements Markham's draft letter. He has consulted his co-treasurer of the Discovery fund [Cyril Longhurst] who agrees they should be addressed. Markham's letter states that '"the expenses of the two ships have been amalgamated into one "account""'. This is untrue, as the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society are responsible for the 'Discovery' fund, while the Royal Geographical Society is solely responsible for the 'Morning' fund. The Antarctic Finance Committee can transfer sums between the funds, but they are technically distinct.

The second issue is that Markham states '"a credit of £2000"' will be ready at Christchurch. Kempe agrees a sum will be necessary, but this has not yet been agreed by the Finance Committee. At the last meeting ' Sir Clements Markham never asked us to authorise the placing of any sum to Scott's credit'. Kempe believes the amount should be formally authorised before Huggins signs the letter.
