After writing to Kempe in the morning it seemed to him that it would be best in the first instance, to ask Markham to accept and sign the letter he has already signed and sent (in duplicate, one for each relief ship) to the RGS. If he refuses, then the two Presidents can send independently letters of greeting. He had already written the enclosed letter, which, if Kempe can approve, could be sent to Markham. Singularly, the enclosed note from Darwin suggests an identical plan. Please think over this plan, and they can decide at their meeting tomorrow. He is sure they should not attempt to construct a compromise letter - it would compromise them. |
