Title | Copy letter from Robert Falcon Scott, aboard the 'Discovery', Auckland Island, [New Zealand], to the Presidents of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society |
Creator | Scott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer |
Recipient | Huggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Date | 23 March 1904 |
Description | Marked 'In Confidence'. Discusses the financial situation of the Expedition, in particular the cost of the relief ship in 1903. Scott regrets that the Treasury took a 'grave view' of this, but aside from this he believes the second winter was of great benefit to the scientific work of the expedition. Preliminary reports from the scientific officers will be delayed until they have time to look over their collections and notes. Scott also outlines the resurveying work carried out on the voyage. Provides list of supplies used and repairs to the 'Discovery' that will be required. Scott anticipates that there may be difficulties with payment to the ship's crew. Also contains details of an agreement between Scott and the 'Lyttelton Times' regarding payment for photographs and information about the expedition. |
