Title | Copy letter from Captain R [Robert Falcon] Scott, H M S Bulwark, Devonport, to Sir Archibald Geikie |
Creator | Scott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer |
Recipient | Geikie; Sir; Archibald (1835-1924) |
Date | 9 January 1909 |
Description | Copy of letter [for the original, see MS/591/5/12].
Scott regrets that Geikie has sought the opinion of the Hydrographer [Admiral Arthur Mostyn Field]. He cannot be considered an arbitrator for the case because he was involved with the dispute around Scott's appointment as leader of the Antarctic Expedition. Refers back to mistakes in the Meteorological Volume, and makes clear that he has not dismissed the possibility of corrections being published in the second volume, but cannot drop the matter 'until I am satisfied that justice will be done'.
Scott does not wish to make the controversy public, and has done all he can to restrict knowledge of the affair to a small circle of interested parties. However, Scott is concerned that Dr [William Napier] Shaw's criticisms are fully accepted by the Royal Society given their refusal to launch an investigation, and requests authorisation to release details of the matter and the correspondence. |
