TitleCopy letter from Archibald Geikie, the Royal Society, to Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott
CreatorGeikie; Sir; Archibald (1835-1924)
RecipientScott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer
Date18 January 1909
DescriptionTypescript copy of letter [identical text to MS/591/5/13].

Geikie explains that Scott is mistaken, and that Admiral [Arthur Mostyn] Field was not acting as an arbitrator in the dispute over the Meteorological Volume. He notes that some of Scott's criticisms against Dr [William Napier] Shaw's preface were 'expressed in rather strong language'. Geikie states that he consulted with the Officers of the Royal Society and they agreed to seek the opinion of a 'competent outsider'. Geikie has no knowledge of Field 'ever having been a partisan against you', and points out that going public would damage the reputation of the Expedition. Geikie again offers to ensure all errors are corrected in the second volume when it is published, and to insert fly-slips into the first volume if required. If Scott is still not satisfied, he is free to take further action as he sees fit.
