Title | Draft text for the preface to the second Meteorological Volume of the Discovery Expedition [by Archibald Geikie] |
Creator | Geikie; Sir; Archibald (1835-1924) |
Date | [January 1913] |
Description | Draft [in Geikie's hand] of text [for the second Meteorological Volume], outlining Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott's objections to various remarks in the first meteorology volume, published in 1908. It summarises Scott's position that all the observations of wind direction on land were taken as 'true' north and not 'magnetic' north, despite some doubts raised in the first volume. It also highlights issues with positions given in several tables in the first volume. The text states that it is 'a matter of regret' that the advice of the expedition members was not sought regarding the incomplete data prior to publication. Finally, the text explains the challenge of accurately determining the slope of the Great Barrier. With various alterations in pencil [these have been incorporated into a typescript copy, see MS/591/5/28]. |
