TitleCopy letter from [Archibald Geikie] to Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott
CreatorGeikie; Sir; Archibald (1835-1924)
RecipientScott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer
Date11 December 1908
DescriptionGeikie has been waiting in hope that Scott would consider [William Napier] Shaw's reply to his criticisms and change his course of action. He did not reply to Scott's second letter of complaint, 'for it did not seem to me to raise any essentially new points'. The mistakes in the tables Scott pointed out are unsurprising where information was missing from records at the disposal of the Meteorological Office. Geikie again regrets that the Meteorological Office did not contact Expedition members about these matters.

The Royal Society submitted the whole case to Admiral [Arthur Mostyn] Field for his fair judgement of the work. A copy of his judgement is enclosed for Scott. Field agrees with Geikie that the matter should proceed no further. The mistakes can be corrected in the second volume in preparation, and Geikie assures Scott that he will have sight of the proof sheets for this before publication.
