| Description | Thanking Larmor for his letter of 7 February, saying that she has been finding out many things since writing, but does not want to bore Larmor with them. She responds to Larmor's query on what happened at the beginning, when the slipping surface is formed faster than the vortices can get to it, reproducing Larmor's small diagram and her own corrected version of it. The vortices close to water would turn clockwise, not anticlockwise, moving in the same direction as the water. She explains that at the beginning of the flow, a large vortex forms in the lee of the pier, and at its maximum size, another vortex forms ahead of it, turning in the opposite direction, breaking into smaller vortices and spreading along the channel. Finally the smooth jet shows itself with the other phenomena drawn in her last letter. She illustrates the early stages with two small drawings of vortices. |
