| Title | Letter from D'Arcy W [Wentworth] Thompson, University College, Dundee, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Thompson; Sir D'Arcy Wentworth (1860-1948); British zoologist and classical scholar |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 2 March 1916 |
| Description | He consults Larmor on a problem in the structure of a radiolarian shell or skeleton, which is tetrahedral, and probably formed by a silification of the partition walls in a simple aggregate of four symetrically placed cells or vesicules. There are several interesting points to this system, but his difficulty lies in the apical cusp, probably repeated symmetrically at the four angles of the tetrahedron. He would like to find a simple explanation of the cusp. He thinks it may have been subject to some shrinkage, but his explanation is not very neat. He promises to send more proofs to Larmor shortly. A Mr. Watt M.P. is asking nasty questions about Thompson's salary at the Fishery Board. Their work at sea has stopped and so is the bulk of their expenditure. He promises a new paper soon, on North Sea temperatures, with many charts, |
