TitleLetter from W N [William Napier] Shaw, 10 Moreton Gardens, Old Brompton Road, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorShaw; Sir William Napier (1854-1945); British meteorologist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date25 March 1905
DescriptionHe asks Larmor to persuade the Royal Society to nominate the two members of the new M.O. [Meteorological Office] body to conclude the protracted negotiations. He, [George] Darwin and [Richard] Strachey have represented to the Treasury that breaking off relations with the Royal Society would be 'disasterous'. The Society is the only body likely to take a wide outlook to consider the selection of a Director. It would be grotesque that an appointment should be made by a body not represented on the governing body. The proposed governing body is not what they would like. He thinks that if two of Darwin, [Arthur] Schuster and Larmor were on the new body, there would be confidence that the scientific view would carry weight. This would allow the Royal Society to make representation to the Treasury, if they thought the grant was not being applied well, and it should be better than 'cutting the whole thing adrift'.
