TitleIncomplete letter from [Joseph Larmor], St John's College, Cambridge, to [George Francis] Fitzgerald
CreatorLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientFitzgerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish physicist
Date9 March 1895
DescriptionLarmor is not 'blown out of the water' along with Fitzgerald's blob of mercury. He has provided a 'most crucial example' of Larmor's views and one that 'at first glance took my breath away'. He replies, withdrawing his suggestions about the force along the current being only electromotive, but he stands by his printed statements. He amplifies upon this, with equations, noting the discrepencies which he found while lecturing on electrons. The manuscript he sent to Fitzgerald is a copy of a verification in the Ampere manner; Larmor describes transverse tractions in answer to Fitzgerald's crucial case of a current parallel to an axis in a magnetic field and he concludes by stating that this is a complete answer to his objection.

In a note, Larmor suggests that 'If you send me my letters back with obscure parts marked, it will help me to state my case in full'. Two passages in the letter are underlined in purple pencil.
