TitleLetter from J [Joseph] Larmor, Hughenden Terrace, Belfast, to 'Dear Master' [Charles Taylor]
CreatorLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientTaylor; Charles (1840-1908); British college head
Date14 October 1884
DescriptionLarmor received Taylor's letter on arriving that evening, having been in Dublin for the past five weeks, examining in physics for the Royal University of Ireland. He hopes that Taylor had a pleasant time in America. For Taylor's notes, Larmor has not too much acquaintance with imaginary geometry, but he can follow Taylor's proof. He gives equations which confirm Taylor's results. He does not see its application, giving his reasoning with a diagram of a wedge sliding between two circular guides. This is ancient, where every point traces a limaçon. He does not think that this can be new, but the homogenous motion is remarkable. Larmor gives references to consult on the matter.
