TitleLetter from Henry A [Alexander] Miers, University Museum, Oxford, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorMiers: Sir Henry Alexander (1858-1942); British mineralogist and university administrator
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date24 July 1908
DescriptionHe thinks he can answer Larmor's letter from the previous day on [William Jackson] Pope's attainments and character. His circumstances may have embittered him, but whenever Miers has seen him he had 'a cheery outlook on life'. Miers gives a character assessment, including that Pope has defended his own opinions strenuously, is independent, but not stern in character. His conduct has never been called into question and is clever enough to adapt to Cambridge. Miers would recommend him for the Professorship of Chemistry in Oxford, were it free.
