TitleLetter from James Dewar, Royal Institution of Great Britain, London, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorDewar; Sir James (1842-1923); British chemist and physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date1 January 1907
DescriptionDewar has waited for four days for a reply to his previous letter of 27 December. He thinks that Larmor is 'endeavouring to get away from my exposé' and claims that he did not request that Larmor, as Secretary, should write another person's paper. This is quite a false view of the case, and developed for the first time. He would have been placed in a humiliating postion if he had asked the Secretaries to exceed their powers. The Secretaries have absolute power in the matter published in the Proceedings, he believes, with the occasional support of Chairmen of Committees. It is out of the queston that he should write a rejoinder to the 'eviscerated' paper of Dr. [Joseph Edward] Coates and he made this point in his speech of 13 December. If Coates's paper had been published word-for-word as communicated, he might have reluctantly considered a rejoinder, but the most malicious pieces of inaccuracy have now been removed as a result of his appeal. He maintains that the whole of his notes should be inserted in Coates's paper 'as a lesson to the Fellow communicating the paper, as well as the author'.
