| Title | Letter from James Dewar, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Dewar; Sir James (1842-1923); British chemist and physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 13 February 1910 |
| Description | The only known experimental fact about the thermal relations of CS [carbon monosulphide] and S [sulphur] has reference to the polymerized body. The combustion in the calorimeter shows the chemical is endothermic, and Dewar notes the products and constituents of the reacton. He discusses the relationship between CS, sulphur, and CS2 [carbon disulphide]. The only intermediate compound is oxysulphide of carbon. After further discussion he thinks that Lamor rmay be right in that he may have C2S2 rather than CS. The paper is only preliminary, but Dewar thinks they have a new carbide sulphide to deal with. He wishes to carry in the research in other directions. Dewar has ordered [Richard] Abegg's book. He is convinced that Larmor had expressed views on the stages of gas decomposition but could not find the reference, forgetting the Wilde Lecture. |
