TitleLetter from J C [James Clerk] Maxwell Garnett, The Ware, Redington Road, West Heath, Hampstead, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorGarnett; James Clerk Maxwell (1880-1958); educationist, barrister, peace campaigner and physicist.
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date1 June 1905
DescriptionGarnet has been unable to find the original paper with a proof of [Samuel] Earnshaw's theorem. He thinks that a cloud of electrified particles in a confined space might remain near the boundary of space, not diffusing. In the case of a gold suspension there must be a positive charge diffused in water to the sum of negative charges on the gold spheres. This woudl make Earnshow's theorem inapplicable. He will try to work out the problem of equilibrium of heavy gold spheres, but meanwhile notes the interesting example of ruby gold solution, which he discusses at length.
