TitleLetter from Arch [Archibald] Geikie, Haslemere, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorGeikie; Sir Archibald (1835-1924); British geologist and historian
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date3 April 1910
DescriptionHe has seen all correspondence except the letter from the Admiralty about the Nautical Almanac, but he supposes this simply asked the Royal Society's opinion on the most qualified candidate. Larmor has addressed this, and therefore the Society's duty ends. Salary is between the Admiralty, Treasury and the selected candidate. The Royal Society would give a judgement on this only if appealed to by one of the parties. It is a delicate thing to interfere with Government in matters of finance, he believes, and the Society cannot be too careful. If they wish to give opinion on any such matters, it should be informally in personal interviews rather than by formal application to a Minister. Geikie has no information that [Philip Herbert] Cowell might refuse the post on the grounds of inadequate salary. Geikie will be in Burlington House next Tuesday. [Arthur] Schuster has asked for a meeting of the International Association of Academies Committee.
