| Title | Letter from Geo Fras [George Francis] Fitzgerald, St Lawrence Lodge, Sutton, Co Dublin, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | FitzGerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 4 July1894 |
| Description | Larmor's development is 'very interesting' although Fitzgerald notes his puzzlement about vortices before realising that two opposite straight vortices have less energy when near one another. He thinks that Larmor is reducing all magnets to amperean currents of the same kind as other currents, noting the limitation of transference from atom to atom. He wonders of Larmor is right in making positive and negative elements rotate in the same direction. This would start 'enormous radiation', he believes. He would have thought they should go in opposite directions as in any electric current. If Larmor thinks that ionic charge can go in vacuum discharge in the absence of matter, this would go against all orthodoxy. Fitzgerald's old belief that Larmor should offer explicit definitions has re-emerged. |
