TitleLetter from Geo Fras [George Francis] Fitzgerald, Trin Coll Dub [Trinity College Dublin], to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorFitzGerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date5 January 1895
DescriptionHe has seen Larmor's Philosophical Magazine article since writing his own letter in Nature. Fitzgerald is fond of the chemical action source of lines view, but he cannot say what is in it. Larmor cannot doubt that chlorine absorbing a huge system of lines gets warmed as a result and he asks if there are not possible systems of vibration. He considers the energy division, thinking that the electromagnetic energy of light is changed into a motion of matter in this case, and Larmor cannot avoid both sets of co-ordinates in his equations. Fitzgerald comments that [George Hartley] Bryan has written to [Edward Parnall] Culverwell, in which he thinks spheres moving in a perfect liquid would not disturb the latter in a Maxwellian distribution of energy way. He discusses this, noting in conclusion that Bryan was not like Larmor in trying to show there was an exchange of energy.
