TitleLetter from Arch [Archibald] Geikie, Shepherd's Down, Haslemere, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorGeikie; Sir Archibald (1835-1924); British geologist and historian
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date2 January 1914
DescriptionHe thanks Larmor for his good wishes. Geikie has no idea how the honour came about, but Buckingham Palace was where it was arranged. He received an express letter from Lord Stamfordham saying that the King had pleasure in conferring the Order of Merit on Geikie for his services in the science of geology. He thinks the hurried nature of the letter implied that 'the matter was only decided that forenoon'. He does not believe the Government had any hand in it, although they can claim to have picked out [Ernest] Rutherford. Geikie asks if Larmor if going to Fishmongers' Hall to meet the Presidents of learned societies. If Larmor is passing through London he may wish to call upon 30 Bury Street, where Geikie has engaged a room.
