TitleLetter from J [James] de Graaff Hunter, Dehra Dun, UP, India, to Sir Joseph Larmor
CreatorHunter; James de Graaff- (1881-1967); British geodicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date11 February 1914
DescriptionHe was gratified to receive Larmor's letter regarding his paper on atmospheric refraction, delaying in his reply until he could get back to headquarters and a good library. Their copies of the Philosophical Magazine are incomplete, and he has found [Joseph David] Everett's paper ['On the optics of the mirage'], but not Lord Rayleigh's. Air temperature values are a difficult matter in any formula for surveying, which does not seem to have been recognised. He discusses the implications for work in the hills, and on plains, stating that he has made a portable mast 150 feet high to carry apparatus for measuring temperature at different heights above the observer. The apparatus is being made in London, and he describes this, stating that once he has these elements, he will be able to carry out Larmor's plan. He notes some of the observational difficulties, including keeping the mast level, and employing an instrument platform on gimbals controlled by three parallel tie rods. He hopes to reduce tilt by using better gimbals.
