| Title | Letter from A [Andrew] Gray, Physical Laboratory, The University, Glasgow, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Gray; Andrew (1847-1925); British physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 19 June 1901 |
| Description | Gray is running some trials of his disk to see if it remains electrified when run at high speed between two opposed conducting plates. His thoughts turned to that direction after Larmor's remark about 'the bullets from the machine gun'. In some of his nugatory experiments the disk was kept in conducting connection with a large Wimshurst machine. He has looked through older books, finding that [Carlo] Matteucci made experiments on the effects of motion and air currents. He describes these and effects which were put down to frictional electrification. |
