| Title | Letter from G H [Godfrey Harold] Hardy, Trinity College, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Hardy; Godfrey Harold (1877-1947); British mathematician |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | c.1915-1919 |
| Description | He will write to [Eric Harold] Neville but does not doubt that the paper will be withdrawn. Neville 'is a tactless fellow', Hardy thinks, and Council [of the London Mathematical Society] could not do otherwise, although Hardy feel strongly about the attitude of some Council members towards young mathematicians. [William] Burnside and Macdonald are arch offenders. Burnside tried 'to squash' [Srinivasa] Ramanujan's paper, which G.B. [George Ballard] Mathews described as 'remarkable' in 'Nature'. Similar things happened when Hardy was first on Council. Neville's work is not wonderful in this case, but he has done good things. The one paper of his they did print was his worst. |
