Title | Letter from William Huggins, 90 Upper Tulse Hill, S W [South West] London, to the Secretary [Joseph Larmor] |
Creator | Huggins; Sir William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 28 February 1909 |
Description | Regarding the selection of the astronomical candidates, which Huggins feels was overall 'judicious'. He feels that [Edward Charles Cyril] Baly 'will not disgrace the Society, but he was not a strong candidate'. [David] Gill has suggested [George Ellery] Hale for a Foreign Membership, but Huggins feels he is rather young for this. He believes that Lord Rosse represented the Royal Society on the Greenwich Board of Visitors, and therefore the President will need to name a new representative. Tikhoff [Gavriil Adrianovich Tikhov] has made new photographic observations which suggest more information about the absorption of light in space, and brightness in relation to distance. Lastly. Huggins writes that [Simon] Newcomb was due to have an operation, but he has no further news. |
