Title | Letter from William Huggins, 90 Upper Tulse Hill, S W [South West] London, to the Secretary [Joseph Larmor] |
Creator | Huggins; Sir William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 15 April 1909 |
Description | He hopes Larmor has had a health-renewing Easter, but is sorry to say that they [Huggins and Margaret Huggins] have been 'living in the valley of the shadow of death'. This is following the death of the husband of one of Margaret Huggins's oldest and closest friends, and with Margaret becoming seriously ill, although her health has now been improving. Many others that they know have been appearing in the 'Times' obituary pages, and they were particularly shocked by the death of [Arthur] Gamgee. Huggins's book is progressing at the printers, and he encloses a photograph that he intends to use as a frontispiece. [George Ellery] Hale will soon by in England and he looks forward to speaking with him, including getting his opinion on [Willem Henri] Julius's experiments at Mt Wilson on anomalous refraction. He sees that [Thomas George] Bonney will be President of the British Association at Sheffield next year. |
