TitleLetter from Oliver [Joseph] Lodge, The University, Birmingham, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorLodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date6 May 1904
DescriptionHe congratulates Larmor on his review of Kelvin's book in 'Nature'. Concerning Larmor's penultimate paragraph, the enclosed copy letter may be of interest [MS/603/7/245], showing Kelvin's attitude to current theories. He takes it as a statement of prejudice only, as Kelvin might be a Boscovichan without objecting to anything in the contruction of atoms from electrons. It seems disappointing that his life's work should have resulted in so little ultimate achievement, although he laid the foundations for much; 'the building will be erected by others'. Lodge is 'much taken' by J.J. [Joseph John] Thomson's paper in the March Philosphical Magazine, and he is giving an abstract of it to the Senior Staff and Student Society, which was established by [John Henry] Poynting.
