Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], Mariemont, Edgbaston, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 10 May 1909 |
Description | He has noticed that Larmor does not always like Lodge's notation, not seeing the benefit of keeping the two aether constants in all expressions. Lodge thinks this saves uncertainty, removing the necessity for specifying whether a thing is in electrostatic or electromagnetic measure. All algebraic experssons are independent of any arbitrary systems of measurement. He discusses the implications, believing that such completeness is unnecessary in advanced mathematical work, but it is helpful in physical interpretation. He encloses a paper in which Lodge has worked out the depth to which waves penetrate a conductor. He does not want to give Larmor trouble, but thinks he would read it easily. |
