Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], Mariemont, Edgbaston, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 19 December 1919 |
Description | Lodge is looking at [William John] Johnston's 'neat & comparatively intelligible paper' in the Royal Society's Proceedings. He notes that no gravity is introduced and therefore everything remains Euclidian and flat. He likes Larmor's later remarks on permanent centres of force in real space and time are better than 'mere analytical abstractions'. Once the nature of the electron is specified, he thinks that current forays of pure mathematicians into physics will subside. 'Gravitational attraction, & refracting by a modified Maxwellian K...will follow at once'. Lodge is glad that Larmor is calling attention to [William Kingdon] Clifford but is a pity that Larmor has thrown doubt 'on the spectral lines part of the business'. |
